He woke gasping for air, his mind reeling with panic, as if tossed and winnowed by a strong wind. Drops of sweat from his forehead fell into his eyes, stinging, and his vision blurred. A quick glance toward his wife and child, huddled next to him for warmth, reassured him they were safe, but a feeling of unease clung to his heart, like rough bark to a tree. His wife was restless: her head rolled irritably from side to side, and her lips were moving, but he heard no words.

He listened for sounds in the dark — thieves, soldiers…

There have been a spate of nervous articles published online and off over the last few weeks encouraging people to vote for Mr. Biden “because our democracy won’t survive four more years of Mr. Trump.”

While voting is certainly the preferable way, it is not the only way. We must, with Henry II, cry, “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” and then act on our own command. We must rid ourselves of Donald Trump, election be damned.

It doesn’t matter how he seeks to retain office — whether by suppressing the vote, by a narrow electoral college…

I had a bad morning, and in this long post I air some grievances, all personal. I work through bad mornings and even whole days by writing and meditation, but meditation wasn’t working for me this morning, so I wrote.

(If confessional essays aren’t your cup of tea, you may want to skip this one.)

The story included below came from Marie Schwab Miller, who writes a daily must-read Facebook post with updates on COVID-19’s spread, treatment, and vaccines, along with a discussion of our evolving understanding of the coronavirus. Dr. Miller usually ends her update with an inspiring story…

(This is an excerpt from a book-in-progress. It’s my offering for Banned Books Week 2020.)

Chris woke in darkness. He could see very little but sensed that he was in an unfamiliar place. His upper body ached, and his throat hurt; a sharp pain, like the slash of a long curved blade, pulsed through his ribs each time he took a breath. He couldn’t move his arms or feel anything below his waist.

He heard a strange, rhythmic beeping above and behind his head. A bomb? Was there a bomb nearby? He was again a young boy in the…

If you pride yourself on being “not political,” the world will soon crash down on your head. You will be forced to take sides and take action. If you have kids, keep reading.

Yesterday, Mr. Trump refused to say that he would allow a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election.

This is an explicitly fascist statement. He is telling us he does not intend to leave office. He’s casting doubt on the legitimacy of the election before it occurs. He’s stacking the Supreme Court to ensure any challenge to his power grab will be rejected.

Mr. Trump…

U.S. Attorney General Barr is proposing that antiracist and “antifa” activities be considered sedition, which is treason. If this push is successful, things are likely to get very, very bad. It will restrict or eliminate First Amendment protection of speech for those on the Left.

There doesn’t need to be a successful prosecution; the mere possibility of a serious charge will deter some people from acting. The New York Times has also reported that the Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into John Bolton’s memoir. I have no love for Mr. Bolton, but regardless of any charges, the…

I’m reading posts and comments about the boy who murdered protesters in Kenosha.

That he was only 17 years-old, so it was illegal for him to open carry a gun.

That he attended one of Mr. Trump’s campaign rallies.

That he was cited for speeding and driving without a license.

That his mother drove him to and from Kenosha (asserted without any evidence I can find, other than the boy was cited for driving without a license).

Stop it. None of it matters.

This is no different than when racists impugn the reputation of a Black man whom the police…

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for an oppressed people to dissolve the political bands that connect them to a despot, and to regain among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of humankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women — regardless of color, ethnic background, country of origin, immigration status, sexual identification or orientation, prisoner…
